Impressive catches earn NZ Sport Fishing Council trophies

There were some impressive fish captures in the NZ Sport Fishing Council’s 2016/17 annual trophy list, including a world record swordfish and a ‘grander’ blue marlin, both caught out of trailer boats.

Nicky Sinden’s 361.0kg swordfish, recently ratified as a women’s 60kg tackle world record, also saw her take out the coveted ‘Old Man and the Sea Trophy for the most meritorious catch of the season. The fish was caught on stand-up tackle in the vicinity of the Garden Patch, out from Whangaroa.

Muriwai club member Wade Wilson, fishing out of Ahipara, landed a 466kg blue marlin to claim the heaviest game fish of the season and Fisherman of the Year honors. The biggest striped marlin went to Mt Manganese's Carey Wilson who landed a 196.6kg fish near Astrolabe reef, also out of a trailer boat.

Billfish tagging honours this year went to Houhora club’s Donna Pascoe, fishing aboard Gladiator with eight striped and three blue marlin to her credit. Whangaroa club’s Baily McIntyre took out the overall tagging award for 12 yellowtail, 10 blue shark, 8 mako and 2 bronze whaler.
